A gabion wall to support cut-slopes on Protea Road.

As mobility month is celebrated countrywide, the provincial Department of Infrastructure (DOI) announced that work on a Klapmuts project is scheduled for completion next month.

“This R141,5 million project was initiated to upgrade 3,3 km of Protea Road (Divisional Road (DR) 1098) near Klapmuts from a gravel road to a surfaced road, and to rehabilitate about 5,4 km of Waarburgh Road (also DR1098) near Joostenbergvlakte,” explained Jandré Bakker, DOI director of operational support.

“The upgrading of Protea Road to a surfaced road includes a 300 m cut and a 330 m fill to realign these sections of the road so that they are safe for travelling at the 80 km/h design speed. Only 1 km of the surfacing work remains.”

MULTIPLE JOBS CREATED

Bakker said auxiliary lanes will be built at the access points to three businesses on Waarburgh Road, along with a bus stop at Joostenberg Primary School. “Drainage works will be undertaken, including the replacement of minor culverts and concrete and earth side drains,” he added.

“Erosion protection will be installed. Appurtenant works include fencing, road markings and road signs.”

A total of 223 short-term work opportunities were created though the project with 38 468 person-days of work.

HEFTY BUDGET

Tertuis Simmers, provincial minister of Infrastructure, adds R43,2 million has been spent on procuring goods and services from targeted enterprises, and 12 local enterprises and eight emerging contractors have participated in the project so far.

“Transport infrastructure like roads are enablers of economic growth and lay the foundations for future development,” Simmers pointed out.

“By improving access and mobility, we connect residents to opportunities, attract investment, and strengthen local economies. This project reflects how infrastructure delivery directly supports the Western Cape government’s Growth for Jobs strategy, unlocking economic potential through targeted, sustainable investment.”

He commended all partners, contractors, and community for their contributions. “DOI is committed to infrastructure that builds the foundation for a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous Western Cape.”
