Twelve youths from Stellenbosch were awarded their chef’s diplomas at a function held at Rupert & Rothschild in November, with all 12 already obtaining employment in the hospitality industry. The graduates (from left) are Chesroy Arrison, Charné Maderra, Yamkela Quwe, Camille Anthony, Hajira Christians, Siphosethu Mgxilwa, Elviso Witbooi, Christelle Steyn, Roberto Burger, Jason September and Gerschen van Kerwel. Their training was facilitated by Stellemploy, a Highfield qualification centre, with funds received from AALL Foundation. The diploma the students received is internationally accredited and enables them to work in any country of their choice. One of Stellemploy’s graduates already works in Dubai as a chef. The group completed six months of in-house training at Stellemploy’s training centre, but had to pass all their theoretical and practical examinations before they started six-month long internships at restaurants at Lanzerac, The Protea Hotel in Technopark, Grande Provence and Boschendal. The best-performing practical student, Siphosethu Mgxilwa, completed her internship at Grande Provence under the mentorship of head chef Marvin Robyn, who was trained by Stellemploy in 2012.
