The Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience, widely referred to at South Africa’s MTB Party of the Year, has attracted the attention of the country’s largest women-only mountain-bike club, the Trail Angels.
The event will be held at Coetzenburg at Stellenbosch University on Saturday 19 to Sunday 20 November. It is an individual two-day mountain-biking stage race, which is ideal for all MTB enthusiasts.
Founded in 2012, Trail Angels comprises an energetic group of like-minded women, who love mountain biking in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. It offers five riding groups to choose from, based on fitness and skill levels – from those who are new to the sport and need a helping hand to get started to those who want to compete in events.
“Our goal is to build a women’s mountain biking community that encourages more women to enjoy the sport in a nurturing, encouraging and supportive environment,” explained Nikki Haywood, Trail Angels founder and owner.
“We have created a community of women who support one another and do tough things together. We have amazing Bike Instructor Certification Programme (BICP) qualified coaches, who show empathy and encourage women to reach their full potential both on and off the bike.”
As many Trail Angels’ members enjoy participating in events and are not too competitive, the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience is the perfect event for them, Haywood pointed out.
“I am really looking forward to taking part in a local two-day event that is non-competitive and encourages entrants to enjoy the trails,” she related.
“Our goal is to have as many Trail Angels there as possible to grow the sport of women’s mountain biking, while showing the community that we provide a space for all female riders.”
Entrants to the Savanna Origin of Trails event can choose to participate in the full marathon or half marathon event.
The longer ride caters for mountain bikers who possess a moderate level of fitness and experience, while the half marathon is the perfect event for mountain bikers looking to have a fun experience on route.
