Since 2019, Calling Academy has been developing a relationship with the Oxford Day Academy in the USA and with the newly formed Centre for Tutorial Teaching at Oxford University in the UK. This partnership aims at pioneering the so-called Oxford Tutorial Method, which broadly focuses on developing critical thinking ability in secondary schools.
The highlight of the collaboration is an annual convention at Pembroke College of Oxford University where learners can experience the historic university, interact with its professors and students and develop their understanding of the tutorial method.
Two learners from Calling Academy travelled to Oxford in August 2019, but the pandemic prevented any travel in 2020 and 2021. Now, six learners have been selected for this remarkable opportunity and will represent the communities of Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Vlaeberg and Eersterivier in England.
Raymond Gwaka, a Grade 12 learner, was selected for the trip in 2019, but unfortunately lost his passport. He will finally get his chance to experience London and the rich history of Oxford between 6 and 13 August this year.
The learners will be accompanied by Reinhard Appolis, a teacher at Calling Academy originally from Touws River, and Kate Niemöller who works with the Centre for Tutorial Teaching to establish the tutorial method at Calling Academy. Supporters looking to assist the learners with their travelling costs may contact the school.
