The parkrunners and team of the Root44 parkrun had a big day on Saturday 19 April when the weekly run was also an opportunity to celebrate the birthday of Dame Kelly Holmes, from Toonbridge in the UK.
Dame Kelly was the first Briton to win two gold medals in 80 years at the Olympics. The British middle distance athlete and television personality is also an avid parkrunner.
It was no surprise as she was the first woman home on Saturday in 22 minutes 44 seconds. This was also her first event in a new age category.
The more than 600 parkrunners and 25 volunteers enjoyed a lovely morning running, jogging and walking on Audacia Wine Farm And along with the early morning workout and birthday celebrations, farmer Trevor Strydom opened his wine shop after the parkrun and offered runners and walker “odd bins” of his sulphite free wines, ciders and rooibos beer. According to the parkrun team the farm does a lot for the organisation through route maintenance, so it was lekker to be able to give something back and score a bargain to boot.
The parkrun takes place every Saturday and starts at 08:00 sharp so be there by 07:45 for the safety briefing.
