Stellenbosch police have yet again urged residents to refrain from giving any personal information to strangers. This follows a man(62) being conned of a large amount of money from his bank account.

According to Stellenbosch police spokesperson Capt Nathalie Martin, the complainant received a call from an unknown woman on 7 April, about 11:00, claiming she was from Absa’s Fraud Department.

“The lady informed him the bank noticed there was a transaction of R1 500 deducted from his account. The complaint had no clue about the transaction and the lady asked for his card number to cancel the transaction. While the complainant was busy on the phone with the lady he received a another phone call, this time from an unknown man who told him that he is working for the Absa Fraud Department and that there was a transaction where money was deducted from Nigeria,” Martin said.

“The complainant then realised that he was hacked on his cellphone. He went to Absa Bank and discovered that a huge amount of cash was taken from his account.”

“We urge people not to give their bank card numbers to anyone even if the person introduces themselves as a worker at the bank. Refrain from giving any personal information over the phone. Rather go to the bank to enquire if you are uncertain about any transactions made on your account. When paying with your bank card don’t leave it out of sight, and ensure when it is given back it is definitely yours.”
