Bergzicht Training and Development celebrated the graduation of its Cathsseta Professional Cookery National Certificate 1-Year Learnership in partnership with CTIA at the prestigious Lanzerac Estate last month.

The event brought together industry partners, family and friends to honour the graduates’ dedication and growth over the past year.

Bergzicht CEO Michele Walker opened the ceremony by welcoming and thanking the graduates’ families for their ongoing support. “It wasn’t always easy on the families,” she acknowledged, recognising the sacrifices made behind the scenes to help the learners succeed.

Several graduates shared their journeys, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs they experienced. “The learnership wasn’t an easy ride, and I’m glad I wasn’t placed on my own at The Werf Restaurant at Boschendal. Lunathi, my fellow student, and I faced many challenges, but we always encouraged each other not to give up,” said Kamvelihle Ngqutwana.

“I’m very grateful to Bergzicht. I got my first job at Blos Bakery after doing my initial Work Integrated Learning there. I gained valuable experience, but I realised I love cooking more than baking. That’s when I had the opportunity to further my studies through the learnership programme funded by The TK Foundation. Going from being employed back to being a student wasn’t easy, but I knew what I wanted and I went for it.”

Ndipiwe Olayi, guest speaker and Mayoral Committee member for Corporate Services, addressed the graduates with a heartfelt message of encouragement and recognition. “Your journey has been one of growth, resilience and determination. You’ve faced the demands of training and the challenges of real-world application, and you’ve come through stronger, ready to take on the next chapter.

“Graduation is not the end, but a beginning. The skills, knowledge and experience you’ve gained are a foundation; it’s now up to you to keep building, keep learning, growing and adapting.

“As you step into the world of work, remember: every challenge is a chance to grow, every setback a lesson. Stay connected, seek support and uplift those around you. The industry needs your talent, ideas and passion. The future is yours to shape. Step forward with confidence and pride; you’ve earned it.”

Bergzicht board member Dr Hannes Koornhof congratulated the group on reaching the milestone, challenging them to think ahead. He reminded them that, while external factors may influence their paths, having a clear goal is key.

“What will carry you through and help you overcome difficulties is the goal you have set for yourself,” he said.

“Do not be afraid to dream big. Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.”
