While most schools are preparing to reopen in the next few weeks Calling Academy, Stellenbosch’s independent boys’ high school, has made the most of the early re-opening date for independent schools last week.

The school has been in rapid growth mode since its inception in January 2018, when it opened its doors to 60 Grade 8 learners. Today 245 boys in Grade 8 to 11 attend the school, representing approximately 30 primary schools.

Learners travel to the school from Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Ida’s Valley, Jamestown, Eersteriver, Firgrove, Macassar, Blackheath, Kuilsriver, Mfuleni, Kayalitsha and Gordon’s Bay. The school facilities of the old Vlaeberg Primary have been significantly expanded with the addition of five new classrooms, a paved quad, a bathroom extension, cricket nets, and an upgraded soccer field.

“Apart from two newly appointed teachers, seven intern teachers were selected from more than 150 applicants to join the school. They are part of an exciting development programme that features partnerships with the Oxford Centre for Tutorial Studies, the Stellenbosch University Business School, The World Needs a Father, Aspire Training Solutions and others,”said Werner Cloete CEO of Calling Education.

The school opened for the 2021 school year on Monday 1 February in accordance with the regulations that allowed independent schools to do so. Learners are attending school on a rotational basis until regulations are relaxed.

“The school’s model and growth attracted a lot of attention in recent times with Calling Education emerging as overall winner of the Ipic Help Foundation’s 2020 pitch competition that featured 24 non-profit organisations. Calling’s bold vision is to develop the most relevant model of providing top quality education to learners from low income communities.”
