The Cape Winelands senior netball team is currently defending its title at the SPAR Women’s Netball National Championships at Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds at North West University in Potchefstroom. The local netball aces are among the 1 800 senior and under-21 players battling it out on the court from Monday 8 to Sunday 13 August. The battle for the senior title is expected to be fierce. Last year, Tshwane, the defending champions at the time, had to withdraw from the championships at DF Malan High School in Bellville, as the team was struck by Covid-19 infections, while Mangaung also withdrew as too many of their players were involved in end-of-year exams. Cape Winelands beat Nelson Mandela Bay in the final to clinch the title. This year, Tshwane and Mangaung are back and will be expected to put up a good fight. The Cape Winelands team were narrowly defeated Cape Winelands 28-30 by Nelson Mandela Bay in their first match on Monday, but stepped up their game to record a 41-28 victory over Buffalo City on Tuesday. Selected matches will be broadcast on DStv channel 244, Supersport Variety4 (channel 209), the SuperSport Schools app and the DStv app. The finals will be broadcast live on SuperSport Variety3 (channel 208) on Sunday 13 A
