Two-time South African Music Award (Sama) nominated cellist Carol Thorns will perform a lunchtime concert at Grande Provence Wine Estate in Franschhoek on Sunday 25 February.

Hailed as South Africa’s leading electric cellist, her engaging performance style and innovative musical concepts have seen her open for international stars such as Vanessa Mae and Elton John.

On her solo album, Sanctuary, her sumptuous cello gives listeners a chance to connect to a more soulful world as it glides over layered strings, piano and orchestra. Sanctuary is nominated for best Instrumental Album at the 2023 Samas.

Thorns will be joined by her colleagues from the popular Afro-fusion band CODA Africa, Zami Mdingi (vocalist) and Renate Riedemann (violinist), to present an eclectic and varied programme of music.

“This time of year is all about the harvest in our valley,” said Thorns.

“In our fast-paced world I am drawn to music that provides space to think, breathe and just be. Many people are not aware of the power of music to provide this respite. I love nothing more than to coax people into an appreciation of classical music.

“In a way this concert is a harvesting of creativity grown over a long season. My cello music was first created during the Covid years and went on to become my Sama-nominated album, Sanctuary.

The music I perform with Renate and Zami is harvested from 10 years of performing together – with many adventures along the way!”

The Grande Provence Harvest Concert takes place at the estate’s art gallery at noon. Concert tickets cost R250 per person, while concert and harvest table tickets cost R750 per person from Quicket.
