Several “67 Minutes” initiatives took place around Stellenbosch on Mandela Day, but one that will continue for a few more weeks is powered by Kunjani Clinic in Kayamandi.
Sister Gxagxisa, a professional nurse who runs Kunjani Clinic in Kayamandi, was pleased to inform the community about a 50% consultation fee discount for patients, along with free snacks and blankets for the elderly on Tuesday 18 July.
Gxagxisa told Eikestadnuus how surprised she was when the community showed up at the clinic as early as 07:30 on the morning, with some travelling from as far as Azania, a newly developing informal settlement in Kayamandi.
Gxagxisa and her Kunjani Clinic team received a R10 000 donation from a private entity in Somerset West. They decided to use the funds by reducing the consultation fee by a significant 50% from the normal price of R250.
What is even more exciting about the Kunjani initiative is that it did not end on Tuesday, but will continue until at least 67 patients have been covered. Residents of Kayamandi and surrounding areas, both young and old, are encouraged by the Kunjani team to come along and consult them.
Kunjani Clinic was packed inside and out, with people patiently waiting their turn in the rain, while enjoying the provided snacks. School children from Kayamandi Primary School were not forgotten, for they were gifted with blankets to keep warm during exams.
Ward 13 councillor Mary Mokopane commended the Kunjani initiative, stating such initiatives fostered community togetherness in addressing challenging social issues such as access to health care.
