Stellenbosch & Districts Cricket Club is not only promoting this sport but also reading in their community.

This Cricket Club from Ida’s Valley came on board in support of the Eikestadnuus Adopt-a-School project.

The Adopt-a-School project aims to empower learners from underprivileged schools in Stellenbosch by giving them access to their local newspaper. Schools can make use of the newspaper to assist learners in improving their reading, writing and mathematical abilities.

Riaan Arnolds from Stellenbosch & Districts Cricket Club, said that they got involved in the project as many of their young players come from Ida’s Valley Primary School.

“We would also want to promote reading in our community. We are also encouraging others to get involved in this great project.”

Jo-Anne Baartman, a teacher at Ida’s Valley Primary School, said reading is very important.

“The more you read the better you understand words. Articles in the newspaper are also used for comprehension tests.”

She said the paper is also used to explain to the learners how the paper is put together and the different sections of the paper.

Chadley van Kerwel, a learner, said he loves reading.

“Reading is interesting. You also learn new words and it helps you with spelling and vocabulary.”

Eikestadnuus would like to invite advertisers and businesses willing to adopt a local school to please contact the newspaper for special pricing packages. Contact Ashton Lackay on 021 853 0211 or ashton.lackay@media24.com.
