The Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) kicked off its 90th birthday celebrations with a swirl of colour and sound with its newest production I Got Rhythm, which is currently on at the Artscape Theatre Centre.

The David Nixon production is dazzling, jazzy ballet set to George Gershwin’s music, played big-band style. Heads will nod and feet will tap to the familiar favourites like “An American in Paris”, “Summertime” and “I Got Rhythm”.

The dancing is beautiful and diverse thanks, in part to international and South African guest artists including Joburg Ballet and Jazzart. The ballet is vibrate and expressive meaning anyone hesitant to visit “The Ballet” need not fear. But what makes this production truly spectacular is the amalgamation of the ballet, jazz and the mastery of the Cape Town Philharmonic and soloists of the Cape Town Opera. It is in during the dances were all these elements come together that I Got Rhythm truly shines. Under the baton of Brandon Phillips the Cape Town Philharmonic makes Gershwin’s music sing.

The costume and set design add to the fun and flirty numbers while sombre and heartache dances are all aided by beautiful costumes and skilful lighting.

I Got Rhythm is on at the Artscape until Thursday 23 May so be sure to get tickets now at Webtickets.
