The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s (CWDM) Executive Mayor, Dr Elna van Schlicht, hosted the seventh Annual Top Achievers Awards in Paarl on Monday 1 March.

“The matriculants of 2020 are truly a very resilient group of young people,” she said. “They have had to adapt to extreme change, overcome immense challenges and learnt to manage great disappointments. However, these milestones have taught them life skills that are set to serve them well in future, such as adaptability, resilience and determination. Being able to start their post-school life equipped with these skills, well, there is simply no stopping their climb to success! I am going to be watching the progress of the class of 2020 very closely.

“I will do so because I know you are headed for great things and I cannot wait to see what contributions you will make to our world.”

This year the CWDM’s partner, Santam, donated tablets to the three top learners in the Cape Winelands. These were Simone Botha of Worcester Gymnasium, Davinichia Douries of Charlie Hofmeyr High School in Ceres and Michiel Nicholaas Kuhn of Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

These learners joined the Mayor, who handed over their certificates of achievement and tablets. The Covid-19 regulations meant other top achievers had to join virtually! This was a new experience for everyone.

We wish all our learners the best for 2021.
