The annual Cape Epic started last weekend and two locals are taking on the epic race to raise funds for Community Keepers.
The Cape Epic bike race will see Dries and Stephan take on the 616 km of the race, which started in Tulbagh and will end on Sunday 24 March in Stellenbosch.
Dries and Stephan are taking on the eight day race to raise funds for the organisation Community Keepers that helps create awareness of mental health services at schools.
Dries and Stephan are both passionate mountain bikers. The two say it has been a dream of theirs to tackle the “immense challenge” of the race. In a statement the two- man team say they realise what an immense privilege it is to be able to race in the Cape Epic and would like to give back to their communities by raising much needed funds for Community Keepers.
Community Keepers is an organisation specialising working with schools to assist them in building a culture of well-being by providing psycho-social services. Services include crisis intervention, counselling and workshops. In 2023 Community Keepers partnered with 79 Schools with close to 6 000 learners in therapy and over 20 000 therapy sessions were facilitated by the organisation.
According to the organisation counselling session costs R280 and most learners would enrol in six weekly sessions. Donations are thus essential for the teams to help provide their services and why Dries and Stephan are taking on the race.
“Our desire is to make a difference to the lives of children less fortunate and aim to create a better future for children in need. Together, let’s bring hope and support to this cause that truly matters. Join us on this journey and let’s make an impact together!” the two cyclists told EikestadNuus.
