The Khayamandi Boxing Academy celebrated Women’s Day (9 August) by hosting a special tournament dedicated to honouring the remarkable women who have shown immense dedication and hard work in making the academy a success.

The day mainly celebrated local female boxers who have contributed to the club’s provincial recognition and achieved national acclaim. Among the academy’s women are Olwethu Mkhathala, a two-time 2023-’24 national champion; Amahle Mthelo, a 2023 silver medallist who is currently preparing for the 2024 provincial championships; Nompumelelo Mthelo, a two-time 2023-’24 national bronze medallist; and Sinalo Khuselo, a young talent with an interesting growth story, who secured bronze medals this year.

These outstanding achievements highlight the incredible contributions of the academy’s female boxers.

The tournament was also an opportunity to share these achievements with the broader Khayamandi and Stellenbosch community.

According to the organisers the day was a resounding success. Mthelo earned the title of best female boxer.

The academy takes great pride in its growth and the accomplishments of its boxers and remains ambitious, striving to promote sports and also to enhance recreation, education and skills development.

The Women’s Day tournament was a call to action, inviting organisations willing to assist in this cause for the development of the Khayamandi and Stellenbosch communities. The academy hoped to find partners who share their commitment to uplifting the youth and ensuring their holistic development.

In preparation for the day, the academy sought support from various sources to make this community development project a success, though these efforts have yet to bear fruit. Nonetheless, the team remains hopeful that their impact will be recognised by individuals or organisations that share their vision.

The academy thanks Gino’s Stellenbosch and Neil Saul’s Fresh Produce for their continued support and helping the academy with achieved significant milestones and continues to aspire for more.

Amahle Mthelo, best female boxer, with SANABO Western cape president Andrew Phokeng, and Eza Hassan was crowned the best male boxer from Khayelitsha Boxing Academy.
