Stellenbosch FC will be in action in their final home match of the 2024-’25 Betway Premiership campaign, when they host SuperSport United at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Saturday afternoon (17 May).
The weekend’s encounter will be Stellies’ 50th match across all competitions for the season, and is a vital fixture in the club’s quest to secure a top-three finish in the league.
The Maroons currently occupy fourth place on the log standings, one point behind Sekhukhune United, and must finish third in order to qualify for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
The team’s hopes were, however, dealt a blow this past weekend (Sunday 11 May), after they suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versveld in Pretoria. The loss ended Stellenbosch FC’s three-match winning run, and dented their chances at CAF Confederation Cup qualification.
“All clubs and all players want to be competing at the highest level and on the continent, so it’s very important for us to get a good result,” Stellies coach Steve Barker said ahead of the upcoming clash.
“Qualification is not entirely in our hands, but we must finish the last two games of the season as best we can, and then what will be, will be.”
The team’s final match will be a must-win away derby duel against the struggling Cape Town City, who are in last place on the log, on Saturday 24 May.
The Cape Winelands club will do their level best to secure victories in their last two league encounters, to give themselves the best chance of qualification for the continental competition for a second consecutive season.
• Kick-off for this Saturday’s match is scheduled for 15:00; tickets can be bought through Webtickets and at Pick n Pay outlets at R30.
