Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers is providing aid to residents of Khayamandi after a fire broke out in Zone O informal settlement on Monday (24 June). According to reports an eight-year-old died in the blaze, which apparently destroyed 43 structures and displaced 125 people. Firefighters battled the flames for several hours before managing to bringing the inferno under control. Emergency services were also dispatched to the scene, where clean-up operations are expected to take place over the next few days. Gift of the Givers also warned of the severe weather conditions expected over the next few days, which led to a warning by the South African Weather Service. Flooding of roads and low-lying areas is expected, especially in informal settlements, where likely casualties are anticipated.
