For the third time since the Paul Roos Rhodes Scholarship was made available to Rhenish Girls’ High learners in 2010, a former Rhenish learner has been awarded this prestigious scholarship.

Helene-Mari (MBChB Cum Laude), who is currently completing her internship in East London, is applying to do a DPhil in Primary Care at Oxford University, where she hopes to look at strategies for TB prevention in high-burden settings.

TB is an issue that is very close to Helene-Mari’s heart – she is co-founder of the NGO TB Proof, which focuses on preventing tuberculosis transmission in health-care facilities and reducing the stigma of having TB.

Helene-Mari’s passion and energies are not reserved for things medical, however, but extend to all areas in which she becomes involved. An accomplished oboist and pianist at school, she needed an outlet for her passion for music, and so became a founding member of the Stellenbosch University Medical Orchestra.
