Three people died instantly after a horror motor vehicle accident close to the Bridge House bridge on the R45-road near Franschhoek.
The fatal collision happened on Saturday (22 February) just after 22:00.
A police spokesperson said the accident happened when the driver of a grey Toyota Avanza attempted to make a U-turn and a Fortuner collided with it. The driver of the Fortuner was heading towards Paarl when the crash occurred, ultimately claiming the lives of four individuals believed to be German nationals.
According to Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, paramedics arrived on the scene after 22:30 along with local security services. “An SUV and light motor vehicle were found in the middle of the road. On closer inspection, medics found two men and two women trapped inside the light motor vehicle,” said Meiring.
“The two men and one woman were found with numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. “Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them and they were later declared dead,” he added.
Rescuers used specialised equipment to free the remaining woman from the vehicle. “Once freed, medics treated the woman and provided her with advanced life support interventions before she was transported to a nearby hospital for further care,” said Meiring. A police spokesperson later confirmed that the women died in hospital. The driver of the SUV sustained light injuries.
