Stellenbosch resident Gert Heyns is set for round 2 when the Fedhealth MTB Challenge takes place at the majestic Blaauwklippen Wine Estate in Stellenbosch this weekend.

He secured the top spot on the podium at the Fedhealth MTB Challenge Marathon last year and will be looking to emulate and improve on his performance this Saturday and Sunday (10 and 11 September).

“I really enjoyed the 2021 edition of the event and love racing on our local trails,” said Heyns. “The Fedhealth MTB Challenge is a well-organised event that caters for a wide range of riders. I enjoyed the finish line vibe and festivities. The route features a lot of flowing single-track and short steep climbs with spectacular views of the winelands.

“I have not raced in a while and look forward to seeing how my training has been going. To be able to race on trails I know well is always fun. My goal is to do my best and hopefully win it again. I would definitely recommend the Fedhealth MTB Challenge to other mountain bikers. It is a great outing for the whole family. The route is great whether you challenge yourself or your friends.”

The popular mountain biking event, organised by Stillwater Sports, sees riders tackle the 15 km Fedhealth MTB Challenge (fun ride) and the 60 km marathon and 30 km half marathon on Sunday. There are also rides for the young ones on Saturday. Entry to all the events closed earlier this week.

The 2022 Fedhealth MTB Challenge marathon boasts a R30 000 prize purse, with the men’s and women’s winner each taking home R7 000, while runners-up will take home R5 000 and the third-place finishers securing R3 000.
