The rush for gold intensifies in Boland club cricket.

The first round of the new Goldrush Boland Super League (GBSL) was action-packed and produced high-octane, exciting cricket matches.

Sixteen teams from the length and breadth of the Boland took part in the newly established competition which culminates in a day/night final this Saturday at Boland Park, the headquarters of Cricket Boland.

Although the early autumn conditions, along with the teams having their first view of the much talked about pink ball, used for the first time in Boland club cricket, meant that some scores were low in the morning, several high scoring matches ensured that fans were royally entertained. There were some fine individual performances with Robertson’s Warwick Abrahim (91) and Darryl Hendricks (88) of Paarl Cricket Club accumulating the best scores. Darling’s Basil George (5/3) and Jevon Cloete (4/5) wreaked havoc among the Vredenburg/Saldanha Krewe’s batsmen.

Other notable performances were Piketberg’s Getrum Brink (4/27), Curtly Claasen from Stellenbosch took 4/18, Van der Stel’s Juan Burger (5/13), Francois Stowman (Hermanus, 4/25), Leighton Dennis from Caledon took 4/18 and Luwayden Siegelaar from Robertson finished with 4/17.

Two Boland contracted players, Jevano Baron (Paarl East, 3/15) and Adrian du Toit (Paarl 55), also showed their class.

James Fortuin, CEO of Cricket Boland, was happy with the first round of the GBSL: “It was great to see our club cricketers playing in bright clothing with their names on the back. We saw great battles between bat and ball.

“We hope that the cricket community will flock to Boland Park to support their favourite clubs and players. We at Cricket Boland are looking forward to hosting our clubs and their supporters. Once again, we would like to thank our friends at Goldrush who’s support has made this dream a reality.’’

The winners and runners-up of the four pools will now slog it out for a place in the semi-final on Thursday at Boland Park.
