Thank you, Stellenbosch! With the community’s support each day, approximately 100 vaccinations are given at Van Der Stel Hall. As the Covid-19 vaccination service is well settled at Western Cape Health’s facilities, the vaccination service at Van Der Stel Hall comes to a close on 31 March.

“This was a nice challenge!” says Sr Anthia Meyer. “We did what we could and now it is the time for service delivery to return to normal.”

Meyer, who takes the lead in Western Cape Health’s roll-out of the vaccine at Van Der Stel Hall, says she is a bit sad about ending this chapter and returning to Groendal, where she renders services through a mobile clinic.

Over time Meyer and her team could see how the panic caused by unfounded stories spreading in communities about the vaccine ceased, and people started to understand the vaccine is safe, that it would protect them from severe Covid-19.

The gratitude that people expressed towards staff urged them on.

The team succeeded in giving a total of 33 274 vaccines between May 2021 and 11 March. In the greater Stellenbosch area 165 253 vaccines were administered by 14 March.

“This initiative again reminded me of the importance of going the extra mile for anyone who wants health-care service,” said Meyer. “I’ve again seen how giving a minute or two to listen to someone, can be life changing.”

She reminds the public that getting the booster dose is an important step to ensure you have the greatest possible protection from Covid-19.

“Van Der Stel is one of the bigger halls we use as vaccination site for Covid-19 vaccines,” says Sr Denise Johnstone, Primary Healthcare Manager in the Stellenbosch area. “We are proud of staff for running with this temporary initiative and managing it well. “Thank you also to partners like Stellenbosch Municipality for their support.”
