Help Khayamandi Primary fill its bookshelves

Khayamandi Primary School boasts a lovely library, but now it needs help to fill its shelves with books.

Working with learners from the school, local yeboneers from the Western Cape government’s YearBeyond project found the school needed a bit more help. The yeboneers run two projects with the learners – the first providing help for learners who come from vulnerable homes and the second, an after-school project that helps the learners with literacy and literature.

The yeboneers said they found the learners eager to learn, but a lack of resources, such as reading material and educational toys, poses a challenge.

And so the idea of a book drive was started to help the learners gain access to more educational material.

Yeboneers who spoke to Eikestadnuus say they know the challenges school children face having grown up in the community themselves.

The book drive and projects such as the walking bus are therefore essential. Mornings see yeboneers walk around the neighbourhoods, singing aloud as they accompany children to school. Together they form a walking bus, making sure all the learners get to school safely.

Donations have been trickling in from the local library and churches, but the group hopes more residents will help. Textbooks, storybooks, posters and stationery are welcome.
