Stellenbosch Football Club will have the opportunity to create history on Saturday afternoon (16 December) when the club takes on TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout Cup final.
The encounter will be Stellies’ first-ever appearance in a cup final and follows the club’s remarkable run in the competition thus far, having eliminated the likes of Chippa United, Polokwane City and Richards Bay FC on their road to the final.
“Reaching the Carling Knockout final is something that gives me great pleasure,” said Rob Benadie, CEO of Stellenbosch FC.
“It’s an achievement that makes us all proud, as it is something we aimed to do in our first five years in DStv Premier Soccer League (PSL), and is an indicator of how healthy we are as a club, both on and off the field.”
The final follows about a week after the local lads ensured that the Western Cape remains maroon after defeating rivals Cape Town City in an enthralling DStv PSL encounter last Friday evening (8 December).
The highly anticipated Cape Derby lived up to all expectations at the Danie Craven Stadium, where hosts claimed a dominating 1-0 victory over their neighbours through a solitary goal by Ivorian forward Anicet Oura.
“I’m obviously super proud and excited about the victory over Cape Town City,” said head coach Steve Barker after the match. “It was a superb, committed and energetic performance.”
Friday’s victory saw the local PSL outfit extend an impressive record against the Citizens, with the Cape Winelands team now having won five of the last six meetings between the two sides. After 14 games, they are in third place on the table with 23 points.
Now though, they will change their focus to the Carling Knockout Cup final, which kicks off at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban at 15:00. The match will be broadcast live on SuperSport2 (DStv channel 202).
