Nominations are now open for this year’s Helgaard Steyn Award for Music Composition, one of the largest art prizes in South Africa.

The prestigious award, established by the estate of former MP and businessman Dr JH (Jan) Steyn, is presented to an outstanding South African artist in one of four disciplines – musical composition, painting, literature and sculpture – every year. Since its establishment in the 1980s, the value of the prize has grown to more than R500 000.

This is the sixth time a composer will receive the Helgaard Steyn Award. The previous recipients are Roelof Temmingh, Peter Klatzow, Stefans Grové, Hans Huyssen and Adrian More.

This year’s judges are Professor Chris van Rhyn of North West University, Lance Phillip of the University of the Free State and Professor Hendrik Hofmeyr of the University of Cape Town.

. People or organisations in the music discipline are invited to nominate compositions for award by Friday 30 September. For further details, visit helgaardsteynpryse.co.za or send an email to info@helgaardsteynpryse.co.za.
