Nineteen events are scheduled for the Food Indaba 2024, which takes place at venues across the Cape, including Lynedoch and Stellenbosch, from Monday 22 July to Sunday 4 August.

Events include talks, workshops, dining and drinks experiences, guided tours and family activities, all aimed at deepening our understanding of food in today’s world. The indaba is hosted by the SA Urban Food & Farming Trust with co-host and sponsor SOLVE@Waterfront.

Among the speakers will be Loubie Rusch, an indigenous-plant knowledge fundi extraordinaire, who will host Dialogues Through Food: Foraging For Weeds, Harvesting For Life, With Loubie Rusch at the Sustainability Institute in Stellenbosch.

The famed wild-food harvesting ambassador will host a group gathering session of wild ingredients in the institute’s gardens, with participants choosing and picking wild foods which they get to take home. For lunch Rusch will share a meal with participants, prepared by the Green Café at the institute, featuring ingredients collected in the gathering session, to showcase the variety, versatility and tastiness!

During the experience she will draw attention to some of her collaborative research and practice-based projects that are helping to fill the gaps that act as barriers to wider regenerative engagement with the local indigenous edibles.

In its sixth hosting year, Food Indaba, which started in 2014, continues to explore the intricate food systems through unconventional and educational approaches. It is an annual programme of talks and events that focus on the local food system with the goal of fostering a healthier, more resilient and just food system.

Many of the planned events are open free to the public.
