Against a backdrop of Human Rights Month the Stellenbosch Lions Club hosted a fundraising event at Melkbaai, Strand on Saturday 19 March to shed some light on gender-based violence.

This formed part of the Lions Club International Foundation’s second annual Walk in Heels fundraising initiative.

Each participant had to bring their own shoes and walk a minimum of 50 m with heels higher than 1 inch or 2,5 cm.

“Monies raised are for the Lions Club International Foundation who donates for global disasters, gender-based violence organisations and or sanitary pads for school girls,” said Herman Cadman, president of the Stellenbosch Chapter. School principals in the Stellenbosch area were also invited to participate on a date and time determined by them.

“Gender-based violence or violence against women and girls is a global pandemic that affects one in three women in their lifetimes,” Cadman said. “This issue is not only devastating for survivors of violence and their families, but also entails significant social and economic costs. Failure to address this issue also entails significant cost for the future. Numerous studies have shown that children growing up with violence are more likely to become survivors themselves or perpetrators of violence in the future.”
