The Volunteer Wildfire Services (VWS) Stellenbosch thanked the learners of Paul Roos Gymnasium for spending their leisure time coming to assist volunteers with cleaning vehicles and equipment in preparation of the 2024-’25 fire season.
According to the Wildfire Services team the young men tackled the tasks with great enthusiasm, adding that the vehicles were cleaner than on the day of their purchase! Community support is vital to the VWS being an efficient firefighting organisation.
The organisation was founded in 1999 in response to a number of bush fires that devastated Table Mountain and Franschhoek.
The unit has grown from a handful of committed volunteers into an efficient, professional, highly regarded wild-land firefighting unit.
All VWS firefighters have full time jobs or are students.
After a fire breaks out the relevant authority will determine the response and call for resources that could include the VWS team. Logistical support is activated and a call for manpower is sent to the volunteer body. Deployment could be within an hour or at a later specified time and is typically for at least a 12-hour shift.
