As part of Mandela Day celebrations on Monday 18 July, Horizon House residents joined Artichoc Creative Café co-owners Nini Jerman and Norman Human to commemorate the late former President and global human rights icon during a 67-minute chocolate making workshop.

In celebrating Tata Madiba the social event was an ideal highlight for the recently established café and a date to remember for the attending Horizon House residents.

Jerman, chocolatier of Winston & Julia Chocolate fame, guided the guests’ interactive skill building session. Human added to their excitement by surprising them with a specially prepared and presented meal.

“We’re delighted that the group participated in our workshop, learnt from one another, and helped honour one of South Africa’s most revered peace advocates,” Jerman said. “It was wonderful to observe their knack for the tasks at hand. I would encourage the Stellenbosch community to continue creating opportunities for the less-abled to discover their love for cooking and similar crafts.”

“It was the attending group’s first chocolate making session,” said Elaine Jansen, a work instructor at Horizon House. “We’re happy the café asked us to be part of such a memorable occasion. It made a positive impact on the group’s routine and social well-being. The tutorial proved to be a wonderful addition to their Madiba Day calendar.”

Locals can participate in chocolate making tutorials at ArtiChoc Creative Café and other craft making options – glass and ceramic painting, splatter painting, soap making, pasta making and more. Parents can join in or opt for a leisurely meal in the restaurant, opposite the demo kitchen, for tea, coffee and wine pairings.
