Stellenbosch FC’s impressive run of form continued last weekend when the club played to a 1-1 draw against Cape Town rivals Cape Town Spurs in the DStv Premier Soccer League at the Danie Craven Stadium.
In a battle for bragging rights, the team from the winelands found themselves with work to do against bottom-of-the-log Spurs after Asenele Velebayi opened the scoring for the guests late in the first half (0-1) on Saturday 9 March.
Steve Barker’s side showed resilience to bounce back in the second stanza and levelled the scoring through striker Iqraam Rayners, who netted from the penalty spot after Denwin Farmer was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.
Stellies went in pursuit of the match-winning goal and came close through the boot of Devin Titus, who struck the crossbar with a powerful strike, but ultimately had to settle for a share of the points.
Nonetheless, the result saw the Maroons set a club record of 16 consecutive unbeaten matches across all competitions, dating back to their last defeat in September last year.
The team will again be in action this weekend (Friday 15 March), when they travel to Durban to take on Milford FC in a Nedbank Cup Round of 16 encounter.
