Maties Basketball and University Sport South Africa (USSA) will host the USSA Basketball Tournament at the Coetzenburg Centre from Monday 2 to Friday 6 December.
A total of 32 men’s and women’s teams will compete in an A and B section. This is the second time Maties hosts the tournament.
Teams of the local university have competed every year since 2016 and matches will be held daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
The Maties basketball team, which has been part of Maties Sport over the last decade, has produced and is proud of four players who represented South Africa at different tournaments. They are Erin Powers (under-23 FIBA 3X3 in Uganda), Nina Kabalin (u-21 Afro-basketball tournament in Pretoria), Dineo Fanampe (CUCSA Games in Pretoria) and former basketball player Lutho Skweyiya, who won the prestigious Sportsman of the Year award last year. Maties Basketball has also won the university’s Media Award for two years in a row.
Outstanding players currently in the teams are Fanampe, Nina Kabalin, Damien Rittels and Junior Kidimbu. “It is exciting for us to host the tournaments, seeing Maties Women’s Basketball is in the A-section again alongside our men’s team,” said Maties Sport manager Charlé Swart. “We welcome everyone in Stellenbosch to come along and support the Maroon Machine; games will be livestreamed on SuperSport Schools for everyone to enjoy.”
At Stellenbosch University basketball is a high-performance sport, and spectators can look forward to jam-packed action and lots of entertainment from some of the best basketball players in the country.
