Jamestown-based group Ubuntu Hiking, held its eighth annual Community “Manne” (Men’s) Hike at Silvermine Nature Reserve, Cape Town on Saturday 12 March, when 37 men tackled the picturesque 8 km route to help raise awareness of cancer and gender-based violence.

As always, team spirit and excitement levels were high throughout the hike.

Ferdinand Linders, one of the participants, said: “Nature has brought calm to my soul on this hike and the mountain is still no playground, but I will be back for the next one.”

Sponsors included the Nedbank Proud of my Town (PoMT) initiative that is implemented in Stellenbosch by local NPO Ranyaka Community Transformation.

“Active citizenry is a key principle in the PoMT model,” says Ranyaka Marketing Coordinator, Sonya Olivier. “Great things happen when communities take action and initiate projects that contribute to the well-being of their towns. PoMT contributed to this hike as part of its People Care and Development programme. We salute each dedicated hiker who participated to raise awareness of critical issues.
