Some Stellenbosch shoppers had a horrible lunchtime experience when armed robbers targeted a clothing store.

According to Stellenbosch police, the business robbery took place at Pep Stores, Plankenbrug, at 13:15 on Monday (9 June).

At the time of the incident, the secured section at the cashier’s gate was apparently open.

The store was full of customers and there were long queues at the pay points.

On his way to override a transaction, the manager was allegedly grabbed by an unknown man, who produced a handgun, cocked it and held him at gunpoint, saying he was there to rob the shop.

The suspect told everyone in the store to step aside, at which point the manager saw six more suspects taking money from the tills.

The suspects then fled the scene. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

A business robbery case is being investigated and no arrests have been made.

In an unrelated incident, Stellenbosch police need the public’s help in their investigations into the body of an unknown man found along Bottelary Road at 19:00 on Monday.

Police say a motorist apparently saw two unknown men next to the road, staring at something in a ditch.

As the motorist slowed down, the two men started running in the direction of Kraaifontein.

After stopping, the motorist went to investigate what was in the ditch and discovered the body of the unknown man.

Paramedics declared the man dead on the scene; his throat was slit and his hands were tied behind his back.

A case of murder is being investigated and no arrests have been made.
