The streets and fields of Khayamandi will host the 10th edition of the songo.info Champions Race, presented by fibertime on Wednesday 12 March.
Renowned as a spectacular spectator-friendly urban mountain-biking event, it has seen riders of the calibre of Alan Hatherly, Jaroslav Kulhavy, Sam Gaze, Anna van der Breggen, Annika Langvad, Anne Terpstra and songo.info founder Christoph Sauser claiming victories over the years.
This year will be no different, with a stellar field of elite athletes expected to test their form ahead of the Untamed African Mountain Bike race.
Hosted on the Khayamandi Sports Fields, just below the songo.info Clubhouse, the race takes place on a 2,5 km-long track featuring a mix of single-track, BMX track, and urban riding on roads and footpaths.
The action will begin with an open race for all comers, which is the perfect opportunity for juniors and amateurs to test themselves on the same course as the elites will race later in the afternoon.
At 17:00, it is the e-MTB racers’ turn to take to the course and test their metal on a track with very few flat sections, which makes it ideal for high-powered e-bikes. At 17:30 some of the world’s best women’s mountain bikers will do battle for the songo.info Champions Race title, before the elite men wrap up the racing with a showcase of power and skill.
“I’m looking forward to coming back to Khayamandi and giving my all to try to defend my songo.info Champions Race title,” said Matt Beers, the defending men’s elite champion.
“It’s always an exciting event, with so much going on. And it’s a great opportunity to represent the sponsors, and support songo.info ahead of the Absa Cape Epic.”
Entry to the event is free for spectators, though a donation to songo.info will be welcome. Amateur or age-group riders wishing to participate in the open or e-MTB races can enter via Quicket for a R350 donation. Men and women with UCI elite racing licences can reach out to the songo.info team for race entries.
All races will follow a 20-minute plus one-lap format and the prize-giving will take place after the final event at 18:30. MTB fans who are unable to attend can watch the broadcast live on the fibertime.tv YouTube channel.
Along with the presenting sponsors, fibertime, the event will also be supported by the INEOS Grenadier and Ninety One asset management.
