Nelsons Junior Football Club in Stellenbosch held its annual awards ceremony at Lückhoff High School and the juniors who were outstanding this season walked away with the trophies.

The club has only been in existence for two years and has done exceptionally well. The club competes in the Stellenbosch Local Football Association (LFA) and the u-9 and u-13 teams were both crowned league winners in their respective age groups by winning the Sport Boards Tournament in Worcester earlier this year.

According to Chriszelda Williams, spokesperson for the club, the players not only excelled on the soccer field but also in their other respective sports. “We are a club that wants to help children reach their full potential,” she said, “whether it is soccer or any other sport or interest. We are all about developing respectful, disciplined, humble and productive young men.”

Two of their juniors excelled in athletics and two individually in soccer and in karate. One of the players, Liam Poole, broke the record in the 100 m for u-13 for primary schools and is the current record holder in the country.

Julio Willams got his Boland colours for u-13 shotput, earning him a silver medal. Due to this performance, he received a high school bursary from Elana Meyer and Zola Budd’s athletics programme to attend Stellenbosch High for the duration of his high school career.

Orlando de Koker represented Northern Schools in the interschools tournament in Pietermaritzburg, while Derrel Jacobs was awarded two silver medals and one gold in the recent karate championship held at the Hope Centre.

“We as a club are proud of their achievements and want greater Stellenbosch to know achieving and reaching their goals and dreams are not determined from where you live or where you come from,” Williams said. “It is about how badly you want it and making a difference in your own life.”
