A carjacking in Khayamandi left one victim with stab wounds and his friend stuffed into the boot of his own car.

According to Stellenbosch police, the two friends had just left a tavern in Thubelitsha, Khayamandi around 02:15 on Tuesday 2 September, when their night out took a nightmarish turn.

When the pair got into the vehicle, they were apparently surprised by four unknown men, who opened the passenger door before stabbing one of them.

Despite his injuries he managed to escape his assailants, who got into the vehicle and forced the complainant to sit at the back, between two of the suspects.

“The suspects drove around Khayamandi demanding money from the complainant,” said police spokesperson Captain Nathalie Martin.

“They demanded R10 000, but he told them he did not have that kind of money and could give them only R1 000. The suspects then assaulted the complainant using their fists and empty glass bottles.”

The complainant’s wounded friend then called his cellphone and spoke to the suspects, who allegedly demanded R5 000 from the friend. A short while later, though, they realised no money would be forthcoming.

They then stopped the vehicle between shacks and stuffed the complainant into the boot of his vehicle.

Meanwhile, local police were alerted to the highjacking and, with the help of a vehicle-tracking company they managed to trace the vehicle in the neighbourhood.

“When the officers arrived to the pace the vehicle was park, they found one of the suspect seated in the car and the complainant in the boot,” Martin said, adding that the other two suspects had run away.

“The suspect was arrested for carhijacking and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He was in custody until he was charged and appeared in court.”
