As a finalist for Mr Sovereign Western Cape 2025 Jody Lee Dryden (29) believes the competition is an opportunity to share his voice, values and light with the world.
The pageant is one of Cape Town’s most prestigious events for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Originally from Stellenbosch, but based in Brackenfell, Cape Town these days, this year’s pageant is Dryden’s third year of taking part in Mr Sovereign Western Cape .”I stepped onto a path that takes courage, vision and and heart I entered this pageant again. This moment for me is bigger than crowns and sashes. It’s about daring to be seen, to be heard, and to stand in the fullness of who I am. I chose to show up not just for a competition, but for myself. Someone who has been growing, learning, evolving and dreaming quietly behind the scenes. I’ve already won by choosing to believe in myself enough to take this leap.”

Part of Jody’s message in taking part is to promote inclusivity and representation as “every identity deserves a spotlight.” He says the pageant is not just about beauty, but about celebrating the diversity, courage and brilliance of the LGBTQIA+ community. “As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community, every look I create and every performance I give is rooted in authenticity, empowerment, and representation. I pull inspiration from queer history, culture and my personal experiences.”
His message to others in the community is that uniqueness is strength.
Mr and Miss Sovereign Western Cape 2025 takes place on Saturday 1 November at the Joseph Stone Auditorium in Athlone. Tickets are available through Computicket.
