Managers and healthcare workers in the Cape Winelands have extended a hearty “thank you” to nurses as the country recognises International Nursing Day today (Thursday 12 May).
“Western Cape Government Health and Wellness’ services are nurse-driven,” says a statement from the provincial Health Department. “Without the skills, commitment and loyalty of nursing staff, healthier communities would not be possible.”
While the department recognises the crucial role of nurses, some of the healthcare workers dedicated to the nursing profession shared their thoughts, including why they love what they do and how communities can continue to support them.
“I love people, but even more so, how they make me feel,” said Sr Linzy Mampa of Brewelskloof Hospital in Worcester. “To be able to treat someone and later see them go home and know that you played a role in that change – it is truly humbling. I’m always reminded to notice and appreciate the small things in life. Honestly, this job has been very humbling.” This International Nurses Day Mampa would like to remind others that nursing staff are affected by what patients go through. She said nurses are not perfect, but they do everything they can and put in many hours behind the scenes to the benefit of the communities they serve.
Stellenbosch Hospital’s staff nurse Ntombebandla Doris Mabesi said: “On my very first day in nursing, I realised this was my calling! I have an urge to help wherever I can.”
She added that community members must work hand-in-hand with nursing staff by following their guidance when in need of their care and taking medication as prescribed. At home do your best to eat fruit and vegetables and to drink lots of water. “Remember, you can give input to patient care through our many platforms.”
Said Sr Riana Nothnagel, Operational Manager at Patriot Plain Clinic in Paarl: “I really love being able to make a difference in people’s lives and their health!” Nothnagel reckoned it is important that the community realise those in the medical industry are human. “We each have our own needs and challenges. We give everything and do get tired at times. But when someone shows us appreciation it goes a long way. It helps us stay motivated and passionate.”
The department calls on members of the community to show their solidarity with nursing and health-care staff by protecting their health: get your Covid-19 vaccination/booster and your flu vaccine as soon as possible. By vaccination, the risk of severe disease and hospitalisation is reduced.
