STELLENBOSCH – It was a tragic start to the weekend when a pedestrian died and another was seriously injured after an accident in Khayamandi, Stellenbosch early Friday afternoon (29 August).

According to Stuart Grobbelaar, spokesperson for Stellenbosch Municipality, a taxi ploughed into the two pedestrians and a stationary vehicle, which was parked on the pavement of George Blake Road close to the Kayamandi Mall, around 12:20.

Community members say the car belongs to a local stallholder who sells fresh produce along the road – a well-known area for informal trading. Stellenbosch Traffic Services reported that the driver allegedly lost control of the taxi and two people were hit.

“A male pedestrian was fatally injured, while a woman sustained serious injuries. She has since been transported to a hospital for medical care,” Grobbelaar said.

Authorities closed all access to the road, but the closure did not stop curious persons from capturing the horrific scene on their cellphones. Videos of the tragic scene are already being shared across social media platforms.

At 16:00, the road had been reopened, but the car was still hanging from a wall next to the bridge. Onlookers and passersby stopped to inspect the scene while workers of a local tow-truck company were on the scene, waiting for assistance to remove the hanging vehicle.

Captain Nathalie Martin, spokesperson for Stellenbosch police, confirmed a case of culpable homicide is under investigation. “No arrests have been made and the matter is still under investigation,” she said.
