The Fairtree Imperial Cannondale team showcased their exceptional talent and determination in the Muratie Mountain Series race held at the weekend.
The team, comprising Luyanda Tobigunya, Kusaselihle Ngidi, Thembela Lukalo, Sthera Xhala, Atlahang Motsoketsi, Yomelela Mfazwe, and Ongezo Mini, set out to conquer the challenging 52 km course with an elevation gain of 1 550 m. Despite facing treacherous and wet conditions they exhibited unwavering perseverance and delivered outstanding performances.
The team’s remarkable efforts paid off with Kusaselihle Ngidi and Luyanda Tobigunya securing the top two podium spots. Ngidi impressed everyone with a spectacular finish, clocking an impressive time of 02:09:21, clinching the first position. Right on his heels, Tobigunya finished in second place, just 46 seconds later, with a time of 02:10:07.
The Fairtree Imperial Cannondale team continued to shine, as Atlahang Motsoketsi and Sthera Xhala showcased their prowess and secured commendable positions in the race. Motsoketsi completed the challenging course in 02:31:40, securing a respectable fourth position, while Xhala followed closely, finishing in fifth place with a time of 02:33:20. Thembela Lukalo, another talented rider from the team, displayed grit and determination to secure the 17th position, completing the course in 03:15:00.
Yomelela Mfazwe and Ongezo Mini also participated in the race, taking on the Short Route. While their timings were not recorded, their participation was a testament to their dedication and commitment to the sport.
With their eyes set on the Wines2Whales race in November, the team is determined to prepare rigorously for the upcoming challenge. The Muratie Mountain Series was an essential part of their training regime, allowing them to fine-tune their skills and build the required stamina to compete for the coveted Exarro Category jersey, which they won in 2019.
As a testament to their prowess, Kusaselihle Ngidi and Luyanda Tobigunya have been selected to represent their country at the marathon world championships in Scotland on 6 August.
