The 36th Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, where South Africa's most talented young musicians gathered, was held at Stellenbosch University's world-class Endler Hall from Tuesday 30 September to Saturday 4 October. This prestigious competition, founded in 1989 by Professor Hubert van der Spuy, has grown into the nation's premier platform for musicians aged 13 and under. After an intense week of competition, three exceptional young artists emerged victorious from a field of 43 competitors representing South Africa and Namibia. Twelve-year-old pianist Agnes Huang from Johannesburg took home the gold medal and an impressive R39 700 in total prizes. Silver medalist Victor Le Du, a 13-year-old pianist from Makanda (Grahamstown) and bronze medal winner Henning Bouwer, a 13-year-old flautist from Johannesburg, completed the winning trio. For over three decades, this competition has celebrated young musical talent, offering dreams, discipline, and over R100 000 in prizes to nurture SA's future musical stars. With the winning trio (from left) are Prof Hubert van der Spuy, Dr Esthea Kruger, Victor Le Du (second), Agnes Huang (winner), Henning Bouwer (third), Dr Marlene le Roux, Junnan Sun and Denise Sutton.
