The Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) held a small ceremonial signing of the Review of the Cape Winelands Community Safety Plan for the 2022-’23 financial year.

Forming part of a wider strategy to address community safety, the plan was reviewed and approved by die Department of Community Safety following stakeholder engagement across the district. A steering committee consisting of representatives of all the local municipalities will be responsible for the implementation of the various projects.

The Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen, together with the Head of Department of Community Safety, Adv Yasmina Pillay, attended the signing.

“The safety of our citizens remains one of our main concerns, people need to be safe so they can work, go to school and be safe in their homes,” said the Mayor of the Cape Winelands, Dr Elna von Schlicht, at the signing ceremony.

“Safety is a huge factor in economic development and investment, and investors want to build factories and develop opportunities for job creation in areas where their investment will be free from crime.

“It is vital that we partner to address and find ways to solve the issues that lead to crime.”

Allen thanked the CWDM for prioritising safety in this manner. “As the Western Cape Government we require all stakeholders, more so at the local sphere of government, to walk the crime fighting mile with us. At a district level they are well positioned to look at matters from a broader, yet focused view, for they know exactly what the safety needs are in each of the municipal areas that fall within their district boundaries.

“I am looking forward to working much more closely with the district and finding further innovative ways to strengthen this partnership. Safety is everyone’s responsibility and the more we can work together, the better we will be placed to overcome any form of crime.”
