The u-19A cricket team of Paul Roos Gymnasium are unbeaten in the St David’s Fasken two-day tournament in Johannesburg.
The team started the competition with a match against the first team of Hoërskool Noordheuwel, recording a nine-wicket victory. Noordheuwel batted first and were bowled out for 141. PRG bowler Callum Appollis was on fire with the ball, delivering figures if 4/27.
In their first innings PRG scored 225/8, with Cormey van der Watt (95) and Cornel Swart (62) top scoring. In turn, Noordheuwel scored 149 (all out) in their second innings, with Dian Winkel (5/45) of PRG shining with the leather.
This meant PRG had to score just 65 runs to win, and they did so with ease to take the spoils. Luca Plekker (26) was the best batsman.
On the second and third day, PRG locked horns with Jeppe Boys’ High School and played to a draw. Jeppe batted first and declared on 279/7, with Winkel (3/67) again the best bowler for the Stellenbosch side.
In their innings, PRG were bowled out for 178, with William September (49) top scoring with the willow. Jeppe returned to the crease for their second innings, and were all bowled out for 113. Winkel (4/20) and Riley Norton (4/33) were the chief destroyers for PRG.
PRG set out to chase down the 214-run target, but could not achieve this at the close of play. The local lads ended on 152/6, with Liam Basson (43*) leading the charge in the drawn encounter.
