The under-19A water polo team of Paul Roos Gymnasium (PRG) participated in the annual St Andrew’s Shield in Makhanda (Grahamstown) from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 January. Most of the top water polo teams in the country were in action in the tournament, which saw PRG remain unbeaten throughout the group stages. The team progressed to the final after a hard-fought battle with St Andrew’s College in the semi-finals, and came head-to-head with Rondebosch Boys’ High in the final. The local lads pulled off a remarkable comeback to win 5-3 and bring the trophy home. The victory is the culmination of 10 years’ hard work in the PRG water polo programme. Coach Vaughn Marlow credits the time and effort of this year’s players as well as the commitment and dedication of old boys who were part of the programme when winning trophies were not always a reality. “Without these men we wouldn’t have the programme we now do.” Thanks also to Rull Csaba from the Eger Club in Hungary, who has also been involved with the sport at PRG for over a decade.Foto:
