The Endler Concert Series in collaboration with the Irma Stern Museum presents South African pianist Megan-Geoffrey Prins. He will perform a solo piano recital in honour of South African composer, Johan Cloete.
Cloete dedicates this concert to the memory of Victor Tichardt and Sonja Canto.According to a press release by Fiona Grayer, Prins has earned a reputation as a pianist of remarkable technical facility and abundant musicality, and is this year’s recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist of the year award for Classical Music.
Cloete studied at the universities of Cape Town (BMus 1980, MMus 1985) and Stellenbosch. In 2010 he completed a DMus in Composition, at the University of the Witwatersrand, under Jeanne Zaidel-Rudolph. “His compositions are written for a wide range of genres, including sacred works, chamber music and orchestral pieces. A strong vein of mysticism in Cloete’s music gives his works a distinctive character. His fascination with the occult, the surreal and the other-worldly, are balanced by a disciplined intellectualism, creating a style that is both intuitive and intellectual,” says Grayer.
Prins will perform both Cloete’s Piano I, Piano IV and Klipklavier alongside works by Debussy and Liszt.
The concert takes place on Saturday 19 October at 15:30 at the Irma Stern Museum, Rondebosch, Cape Town.
Tickets are R140 (regular) and R100 (students and pensioners) and are available through Computicket and at the door. For more information contact Fiona Grayer at concerts@sun.ac.za or 021 808 2358.
