Last week (1-4 May) the National All Girls’ Festival was hosted in Paarl by Paarl Girls’ High and La Rochelle.

Rhenish Girls’ first hockey team won three of their four pool games, drawing the fourth. They played Clarendon Girls’ High in the quarter finals and won 3-2 on shoot-outs before facing Eunice Girls’ High in the semi-finals, a match they won 1-0.

The final match in the 2019 tournament was between Rhenish and Collegiate Girls’ of Port Elizabeth.

Earlier in April, the teams had met in the annual game between the two schools, this year hosted in Port Elizabeth. On that occasion, Collegiate Girls’ won. Rhenish Girls’ knew on Saturday that facing Collegiate Girls’ in the final was going to be a tough call and they left everything on the field.

Amy-Lee Hobson of Rhenish Girls’ High scored the only goal of the match and Rhenish was crowned the Champions of the Tournament.

Rhenish last won this tournament in 2002 when they were captained by former South African hockey player, Kathleen Taylor.

The 2019 team is captained by Samantha Smuts who represented South Africa in the Junior Olympic 5s team in October 2018.
