Rhenish Girls’ High presented their annual Skills Day on Friday 19 May to delighted children from the Pebbles Project.
The day, organised by Chelsea Chapman and Ammelie Diemont who are in charge of the school’s community service committee, was even bigger this year with the inclusion of cultural activities and new sports.
The day is organised to give children who are less privileged access to the school’s many facilities. On the day, children got the opportunity to play hockey, netball and soccer as well as make some music with instruments.
Ammelie says it is wonderful to see their ideas become a reality, which benefits more than 40 children from various farms in the Stellenbosch area.
Chelsea is a regular volunteer with the Pebbles Project and visits children at Delheim Wine Estate. Her positive experience with the organisation has motivated other learners to also become involved.
One such learner is Jordan Dowd. Her family is very involved with the organisation. She visits Eikendal Wine Estate every Wednesday. “Visiting the children just brightens up my day,” Jordan says. “It’s an escape from reality for me.”
Head girl Victoria Beekman was in charge of soccer and said the children scored some beautiful goals.
Jabian du Plessis of Cloetesville High already plays soccer at his school, but was very excited to try his hand at hockey – something his school does not offer.
Rhenish has a number of community outreach projects every year, and recently also collected and donated sanitary products for less privileged schools in Stellenbosch.
