Rhenish Girls’ High School will have the opportunity to field not one but three of its hockey teams in the various Top 12 hockey tournaments that will take place in August.
The first hockey team (u-19s) will take on the rest of the top u-19 teams at C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje in Bloemfontein. At the same time, the u-16s will face their peers in the Top 12 hockey tournament hosted by Paarl Gimnasium, and the u-14s will have a home-ground advantage as they take on the top 12 u-14 teams at Rhenish Girls’ High School.
“Our teams are excited and looking forward to battling it out for the top spot at these tournaments,” said Chris Gerber, head of hockey at Rhenish Girl’s High School. “We are also only one of two schools to have three of our teams qualify to participate in the top 12 tournaments, something we are very proud of.”
The top u-14, -16 and -19 teams participating in these tournaments qualified because they finished in the top 12 positions on the SA School Sports Website per age group on 31 May 2023.
“We are ready and have prepared hard to compete with these top teams,” said Baylee Engelke, South African Girls Hockey, Rhenish Girls’ High School first team captain and head of the Rhenish Girls’ High School sports pillar. “They are all quality sides, as they have qualified in the top 12 teams in the country. Therefore we take every game as a play-off to qualify for the finals.”
These tournaments have become an annual fixture on the hockey calendar and will continue to be hosted, everything permitting by these schools.
You can follow the teams as they play on the SuperSport Schools App and the various tournament’s social media profiles.
