The Rhenish Girls’ High School first hockey team claimed the coveted title of the South African School Sports’ Top 12 hockey tournament for the first time on Saturday 10 August. The Stellenbosch team recorded a thrilling 3-1 shoot-out victory over St Mary’s DSG (Kloof) in the final in Bloemfontein, after the score remained deadlocked at 1-1 after normal time. The victory means Rhenish is the top under-18 girls’ hockey team in the country. The Rhenish under-14A team also had a taste of finals hockey as they claimed the silver medal in the under-14 instalment of the tournament, which was hosted at Rhenish in Stellenbosch. They unfortunately suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of C&N Sekondêre Meisieskool Oranje. Meanwhile, the Rhenish under-16A team claimed ninth place in the under-16 Top Schools tourney hosted by Paarl Gymnasium. In their last match of the competition they managed to claim a 2-1 shoot-out victory over Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria after both teams were scoreless at the end of regular time.Photo: Marnus Photography/DKM Photography
